Redact

Note: Redact is only compatible with Review and not the Classic/HTML Review Interface. To learn more about how to determine the default Viewer, visit Users.

Redact allows you to apply markups to imaged documents, Excel files, and PDF files either manually or automatically as part of a project. You determine how a project applies markups by creating rules that establish what words, terms, and/or regular expressions will receive markups. Once a project has been run, Redact also provides tools to make reviewing markups easy. Finally, running the production preparation project not only prepares Excel and PDF files for production, but you can also retain a copy of each document in the project to make it easy to edit the produced documents in the future.

This page contains the following information:

Example Redact Workflow

While Redact is flexible enough to support different workflows, the following is a typical workflow:

  1. Identify a set of Excel or PDF files that require markups.

  2. Do any of the following to apply markups to the set of documents:

  3. Review the markups to ensure quality control before production. To learn more, visit Reviewing markups to ensure accuracy.

  4. Create a saved search of marked-up documents to assist you in producing them. To learn more, visit Searching for documents with Redact fields.

  5. Create and run a production preparation project to produce the Excel and PDF files. To learn more, visit Automated production preparation project.

Redact Permissions

Redact contains a number of permissions that you can grant to users to determine what actions they can take using this feature. To help make it easy to understand what permissions do and what permissions you may want to assign to various users, there is a comprehensive list of all Redact permissions below and then groups of permissions that you may want to assign to allow a user to perform specific types of workflows. You can quickly navigate to these sections by using the links below:

When assigning Redact permissions, it is important to note that the Native PDF Redactions, Native Excel Redactions, and Image Redactions permissions let you apply markups across a set of documents and/or apply markups manually in the Viewer for their respective file types. To help you understand what happens if these permissions are not granted to a user, a description of what a user cannot do without each permission is included below.

  • Native PDF Redactions - Users will not see PDF markup projects or Redact Markup Navigator features in the Viewer for native PDFs without this permission. Additionally, users will not be able to automatically or manually apply markups on native PDF documents.

  • Native Excel Redactions - Users will not see Excel markup projects or spreadsheet propagation projects without this permission. Additionally, users will not see Redact Markup Navigator features in the Viewer for native Excel documents without this permission. They will also not be able to automatically or manually apply markups on native Excel documents.

  • Image Redactions - Users will not see the image markup project or image template projects without this permission. Additionally users will not see Redact cards in the Viewer for images without this permission. They will also not be able to apply redactions and/or highlights on the Document object.

Note: All Redact permissions, including Redact mass operations, are granted to system and workspace administrators upon the initial workspace install. After installation, it is up to the system and workspace administrators to grant additional Redact permissions to user groups per workspace.
