Setting up data points in the Viewer
Data points are highlighted values in a contract — such as dates, monetary amounts, party names, or custom terms — that the Contracts Viewer identifies using regular expressions or persistent highlight sets. The Data Points pane, located in the left navigation area of the Contracts Viewer, helps reviewers locate and navigate to these key values during contract review.
Data points visible in the Contracts Viewer come from the following sources:
- Regular expressions that ship with Contracts — built-in patterns for common contract data, such as dates and currency.
- Custom regular expressions — patterns you create to match terms specific to your review. For more information, see Create and edit regular expressions.
- Persistent highlight sets — highlight sets you create in Relativity to visually mark key terms. For more information, see Persistent highlight sets.
When you open the Data Points pane, each data point group displays all results found in the contract. Results that repeat include a badge indicating the number of hits. You can click any result to navigate to its location in the contract text. Data points are also visible on the Highlights Minimap.
You can organize data points into data point filters to control which data points load in the viewer. Filters appear as items in the Filters drop-down menu in the Data Points pane.
Why use data point filters
Data point filters let you group related data points into categories that align with your review objectives. Using filters provides two key benefits:
- Improved viewer performance — Only the data points included in the selected filter load in the viewer, reducing load times for contracts with many regular expressions or highlight sets.
- Focused review experience — Reviewers see only the data points relevant to their current task, reducing visual clutter and improving efficiency.
For example, you might create filters for each type of review project:
| Filter name | Data points included |
|---|---|
| Lease Review | Rent amounts, lease term dates, renewal clauses, tenant names |
| LIBOR Transition | LIBOR references, interest rate formulas, fallback language |
| M&A Diligence | Change of control clauses, assignment restrictions, termination triggers |
Each reviewer can then select the appropriate filter from the Filters drop-down menu in the Data Points pane to see only the data points relevant to their assignment.
Creating a data point filter
Before creating a filter, make sure you have already created the regular expressions or persistent highlight sets you want to include. For more information, seeCreate and edit regular expressions and Persistent highlight sets.
To set up data point filters:
- Click the Contracts Data Points Filter tab.
- Click New Data Points Filter.
- Give your filter a name.
- Enter an order.
- Mark whether you want this filter to be visible in the drop-down.
- Add regular expressions or persistent highlight sets to the filter. You can add multiple items of each type.

- Click Save.
After you save the filter, it appears as an option in the Filters drop-down menu in the Contracts Viewer Data Points pane.
