This topic describes how to set up and use OpenAI ChatGPT with the Relativity MCP server.

Prerequisites

Before you can use the Relativity plugin in ChatGPT, confirm that you have the following:

The Relativity plugin added to your workspace by your ChatGPT administrator.
You must be a System Administrator in the Relativity aiR instance you want to connect to.

Setting up ChatGPT

Follow these steps to connect the Relativity plugin to your Relativity aiR instance:

Open ChatGPT at chatgpt.com and sign in with your work account.
In the left sidebar, select Plugins.
In the search box, search for Relativity.
Find the Relativity plugin added by your organization and select the + icon next to it.
You are redirected to the Connect to Relativity aiR screen. In the Instance URL field, enter your Relativity aiR tenant hostname. To find it, open a browser, sign in to Relativity aiR, and look at the first part of the web address. For example, if your URL is https://kcura.relativity.one/Relativity, enter kcura. The .relativity.one suffix is already filled in.
Select Continue. You are redirected to the Relativity aiR sign-in page (or your organization's single sign-on page). Authenticate with your Relativity aiR credentials.
After a successful sign-in, ChatGPT confirms that the Relativity plugin is installed. Select Try now to start a new chat with the plugin ready to use.

To reference the plugin in any chat, type @ followed by the plugin name (for example, @Relativity) at the start of your message. To verify the connection is working, send the following prompt: @Relativity Am I connected to Relativity aiR? Which instance?

Elicitation support

The MCP server supports elicitation for certain tool calls, which prompts you for confirmation or additional input before executing create, edit, or delete operations. Elicitation support varies by client; in clients that do not support elicitation, tools will execute immediately without a confirmation prompt.

Do I need to be a ChatGPT administrator to add the Relativity plugin?
No. A ChatGPT workspace administrator must add and enable the Relativity plugin for your organization first, but once it is available you connect it yourself from the Plugins page. No admin rights are required for the connection steps.

Why can't I find the Relativity plugin when I search for it?
The plugin must be added to your workspace by your ChatGPT administrator before it appears in search results. If you do not see it, ask your administrator to confirm it has been added and enabled for your account or group.

What happens when I use an elicitation-enabled tool in ChatGPT?
The tool executes immediately without a confirmation prompt, since ChatGPT does not currently support elicitation. Elicitation support is determined by the client vendor and is subject to change.

Can I ask ChatGPT what it can do with Relativity aiR?
Yes. ChatGPT has visibility into all available MCP server tools once the Relativity plugin is referenced. Send a prompt such as @Relativity What Relativity tools do you have access to? and it will respond with the actions available to it.
