Relativity Desktop Client performance baselines

This page is meant to be used as a reference to better understand performance of Relativity Desktop Client for different data sets and configurations. Please note there can be differences in a production client environment due to differences in data, storage, and configuration.

Note: Relativity ended support for and access to the Relativity Desktop Client (RDC) for RelativityOne commercial customers on December 31, 2023. Import/Export is being used for all importing and exporting workflows.

For RelativityOne Government customers, beginning March 31, 2024, RDC will only operate in web transfer mode, which will result in significantly slower transfer speeds. It is highly recommended that Government customers begin using Import/Export in RelativityOne as soon as possible to prepare for the deprecation of RDC on June 30, 2024. Starting July 1, 2024, RDC will no longer be operational. See the Community article RDC Deprecation FAQ for additional information.

Importing and exporting data via Relativity Desktop Client depends heavily on the environment used. An indication of performance can be found below. The baselines were created using the following test environments, in isolation of other activity:

  • Utility Server
    • Standard F2 in Azure
    • Tenant Share storage
  • Windows 10 Client
    • Version 10.0.15063
    • 150/50 connection availability
    • 16 cores; 32 threads
    • 16 GB memory
    • Local Disk (E) storage

This page contains the following information:

EDRM dataset and export results

This test is a larger version of an EDRM dataset and is special because it mainly contains native files. For more information about the EDRM dataset, visit their website.

This test contains:

  • Documents: 200k
  • Text: 200k
  • Total files: 400k
  • Size: 20 GB (19 GB natives, 1 GB extracted text)
  • Average file size: 0.05 MB
  • Numbers are rounded averages of 5 test runs

Images dataset and export results

This test mainly consists of images.

This test contains:

  • Documents: 8616
  • Files: 100k
  • Size: 35 GB (35 GB natives, 0 GB extracted text)
  • Average file size: 0.35 MB
  • Numbers are rounded averages of 5 runs

Considerations

  • Improving your internet speed can help prevent performance bottlenecks.
  • Lowering your ping by switching from WiFi to wire can also improve performance.
  • Antivirus programs can interfere with an export, please create an exception in the program for Relativity Desktop Client.
  • Disable any VPN's, due to their decreased speed and latency. RelativityOne is hosted in the cloud and does not need this extra step.
  • Transfers from network drives or external disks (such as thumb drives/USB drives) will degrade performance and/or you will have issues maintaining a connection. It is most effective to copy data to and from a fast local storage.
