Reverting to the ActiveX viewer

By default, Relativity Server 2021 environments use the HTML viewer when reviewing documents. With this viewer, Relativity is compatible with multiple browsers rather than only Internet Explorer. This viewer also eliminates the need to download and install the kinds of plug-ins required to launch the ActiveX viewer in previous versions.

To accommodate those users who still need to use the ActiveX viewer, Relativity provides the option of switching back to ActiveX, only when using Internet Explorer, on a per user or per environment basis. In some cases, the HTML viewer may not be the best option for displaying a crucial document in your case, in which case the option to revert to ActiveX could turn into a valuable troubleshooting tool.

If you intend to switch back to the ActiveX viewer, you must first install it. For details, see Legacy viewer installation. You can only use the ActiveX viewer in Internet Explorer.

No additional installation is required to use the HTML viewer.

Beginning in Relativity, you must install Microsoft .NET 4.6.2 on all of the machines that need access to the ActiveX viewer. You must also install the new ActiveX viewer installation kit, which includes the Visual C++ 2015 redistributable, from the Workspace Details tab. You can't use the Relativity viewer with earlier versions of Relativity. Also, earlier versions of the ActiveX viewer aren't compatible with Relativity more information, see Legacy viewer installation.

Note: If you have a client machine that accesses multiple instances of Relativity that require different versions of the ActiveX viewer, the corresponding ActiveX viewers must be installed. To ensure proper viewer functionality, you must close their browsers before they switch from one version to the next.

This page contains the following sections:

Note: Beginning in Relativity you must download and install the latest version of the Viewer Installation Kit. For more information, see Legacy viewer installation.

Reverting the environment

For system admins who want all users in their Relativity Server 2021 environment to use the ActiveX viewer to review documents, there is an option in the Instance setting table to enable the ActiveX viewer called UseLegacyViewer. This is set to False by default. Set this to True to arrange for all users in your Relativity Server 2021 environment to use the ActiveX viewer only.

If you're using a browser other than IE, Relativity defaults to the HTML viewer even if you've selected the ActiveX option.

Reverting per user

System admins also have the option of letting users decide which viewer they want to use by editing the Change Document Viewer field on the User layout.

To do this, perform the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the Users tab.
  2. Click the Edit link next to the user for whom you want to enable the option of changing the viewer.
  3. Edit the Change Document Viewer field from Disabled to Enabled.
  4. Edit the Document Viewer field in the User Settings category and change it to the desired viewer. Do this if you want to change the default viewer for that user.
  5. Click Save.

Enabling the Change Document Viewer field then enables the Document Viewer field on the user's My Settings layout. This means that if the user clicks on the My Settings link from the user drop-down menu, they have the option of changing the Document Viewer field from either Default or HTML to ActiveX.
